Hometown guy Stephen Simmons is in possession of all the stuff a great country singer-songwriter needs: a solid voice imbued with engaging touches of hurt and heartbreak and all that grabs for the gut, a tendency toward honesty and a quick enough wit to make that honesty interesting but simple. Which, we guess, is why he’s a great country singer-songwriter.

His latest release, Girls, digs thematically into that universal area of heartbreak and heartache and wanting and losing and all that, but it’s more gripping than your average cache of love stories because of Simmons’ deep, charmingly world-weary voice.

Lucky us, then, that the east Nashvillian offered to let us get an intimate capture of that voice, right in his living room, for this installment of our Tune In at Home video series. (Watch the videos.)

I’ve been writing about Stephen Simmons for a couple of years now. He deserves more credit for his music and deserves to be held in the same light as Ben Weaver, Chris Knight and half of the songwriters toiling away in Nashville. Hell, on the strength of his song “Drink Ring Jesus” he should already be inducted in the the Nashville Songwriters Hall Of Fame.

“Pins and Needles” is from Stephen’s new record Girls. It’s a sad story of a relationship with a manic depressive. That sounds heavy and it is. This is not a light song. Buy Girls here.
