On “Live at Blue Highways,” Stephen Simmons revisits some of his best songs, including “Drink Ring Jesus” and “County Lines.” The songs, delivered with a quiet earnestness that Simmons uses to beat back despair, are layered with rich images and poignant lyrics. I wish “Oh Allison (Try Again),” my favorite song from his 2009 release, “Girls,” had been included, but I’m not complaining. “Live at Blue Highways” is a mighty fine album as it is.
